Why dont Sikhs cut their hair? Can Sikhs cut their hair? Answered By Bhai Surjit Singh

English Translation:

The question has been posed as to why do members of the Sikh faith not cut their hair. I will only say a few words on this. This is the Guru's order/command. The 10th Guru (Guru Gobind Singh) told all Sikhs that keeping unshorn hair is a must; it is a sign/symbol of a Sikh.

It is a special command from the Guru that each Sikh is not to cut their hair. All the Guru's from even the first Guru (Guru Nanak Dev) kept their hair. However, Guru Gobind Singh made this a rule to be a member of the Khalsa/Sikh faith. He ordered us to receive amrit (initiation) from the Guru and then meditate on His Name and liberate ourselves.

A Sikh should accept each command from the Guru. There should be no argument over this. As if we wish to follow the path of the Guru we must accept whatever the Guru says.

  • Kabir Ji says in gurbani that keeping your hair or shaving it off, makes no difference - you have to cut off your bad deeds.

Guru Granth Sahib ji says that NAAM is the HUKAM - (not keeping externals) - EKO NAAM HUKAM HA. and Guru gobind Singh Ji said follow Guru Granth Sahib ji. so which defintion of Hukam are you going to believe - what the preacher is saying in the video that HAIR is the HUKAM, or your Gurubani Guru, that NAAM is the HUKAM?

  • @preeto304 Yes, thats true that naam simran is of utmost importance. But then again there is also the importance of rehat. 'rehat pyari muj ko, sikh pyara nahe' - the rehat is more beloved than the sikh(guru gobind singh ji)....There are also writings called rehatnamay - meaning the codes of conduct. they have been worte by gurmukhs such as bhia daya singh ji and bhai nand lal jee. These we must also follow.

  • @preeto304 If we are to become a sikh of guru gobind singh by taking amrit we must keep our hair. This is clearly stated in the khalsa rehat maryada that is a minimum standard set by the akal takht - the highest authority for the sikhs. Bani also mentions taking amrit. So if you go to any amrit sanchar and take amirt then they will clearly tell you not to cut your hair.

  • @preeto304 It is not about integrity of hair only. It is about integrity of five K's. Kesh, Kadaa, Kripaan, Kanghi and Kachhaa.

  • @preeto304 contd. If you don't have five K's, you don't belong to Sikh community. It is as simple as that. But that does not imply that you are not eligible to blessing of Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji or Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji. In this way, Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji and Kabir are not contradicting each other. Gurbani belongs to all but Sikh community has special responsibility to carry on Guruji's legacy onto future generations. It is this special responsibility that requires a Sikh to keep 5 K's.

  • @preeto304 Preeto ji, Kabir is not talking about Sikh community as we see today. Kabir implies that human life is primarily a spiritual pursuit and it extends beyond injunctions of a community. People from non-Sikh community might trim their hair or shave them off but are equally eligible to benefit from Sri Guru Granth Sahib's blessings. Guru Dashmesh ji formed Sikh community by Waaheguru's hukam (aagya bhayi akaal ki tabai chalaayo panth) and ordered five K's as fundamental physical identity.

  • This is his busy time of the year up at the north pole
