@jegspillerpiano Actually there is a scene in that movie which gives you a chance to see murderer's figure. Watch carefully a moment when det. Black enters shop to speak with an older woman.

thanks for answering that...the movie is clear as mud now...lol but i appreciate the effort i guess it's supposed to just stay a mystery i bet if I asked Jack himself he wouldn't know who da man was either...I guess I missed the point of the whole movie...I had forgotten I'd even asked...ty alot! @GettnBooted Yes he was the guy in the car crash, but we never see him and we don't know who he was before that. We don't need to, because the movie is the story of Nicholson's character. We find out he was right all along, and the sting operation would probably have proved him right if not for the crash. It was a real ball-acher of an ending.

@EyeHeartTrexes Wasn't pastor Jackson the killer?

Great movie but this was one fucked up ending. Damn

great movie and a very bad ending...
Excellent film...
Why did he keep working on the case? Because he didn´t want to retire? Because he made an oath in front of a devastated mother? Black suspected that the monster who killed those childs wasn´t captured. After his investigations, he was SURE.
But random situations came in the middle. The man who continued working to stop the killer ended up alone, lost in his insanity. And the stupid cops who wouldn´t lift a finger to investigate went on...
Amazing story indeed...
