This scary big black bug is a Palo Verde Root Borer - 4 inches long with giant mandibles that can chew through PVC pipe! Common to the Arizona Sonoran Desert where Palo Verde trees are prolific.

  • Nice show and info! :-) That's the stuff that SciFi movies are made of! Extra-large, PVC pipe-eating super bugs. I can't say I've ever seen a bug with forward-looking eyes like that - looks like it's staring right at us!

4" is a BIG bug but hard to really "picture" without something in the shot for scale, like a hand or foot. Maybe you could have picked it up for a quick shot! Hahaha just how brave Are you? XD

  • yeah, ya know I did put my foot by it for a second to show scale, but the shot didn't come out very well so I cut it out. I'll definitely do that next time -- hell I might even pick it up since I know it's relatively gentle now. At the time I had no idea what it was, so it was scary! thanks for commenting!

  • Cool bug.Love your videos.
