[[CORRECTION: the two pads on the bottom of the foot pad did display electric conductivity, and it seems to be those 'grip pads' that score back kick]]

I had access to two lajust electronic hogus for a few days and wanted to videotape some basic kicking to see what kind of kicks would score at what power. ///i have not seen much of this sort of video on the internet so I hope people found this informative.

As far as I'm aware this hogu was calibrated to the sensitivity appropriate for a 80 kg fighter (176 lbs), while I, the kicker, am 155 lbs. The bob bag is not full to the top with water.

Also, I chose to roll up my pant-legs to avoid having the cloth inhibiting any scoring, In the recent pan-American games in Puerto Rico for example I saw all fighters had some kind of strap keeping their pant-legs above the ankle.

Also, anything said here or in the video is simply my current understanding of the functionality of these hogus, This is not being written or said by anyone who even claims to be an expert on the lajust electronic hogu, hence some of the information may be inaccurate.

Please keep comments mature and relevant as always.

  • LOL there is no senor on the ball of your foot!

and btw lajust was announced official the only approved electronic chest guard by wtf and will be in used in this up coming world championships and was already used in the world cup this year. by the way if you want to know where the senors are you need a current detector beeper and will beep when connect to the senors. also you need to turn your hips more to horizontal your kicking in an angle upwards

  • The bottom of the foot pad did display electronic conductivity, one of my students is an electronic engineer, and I had him test it.

other hogus are in the process of gaining wtf approval.

also, this video was not intended to display proper kicking technique, nor speed and power. simply the bare minimum force to kick. I explained that in the video.

to everyone else, I'm glad you liked it, I hope I can provide more information in the future.

  • hey had you had problems with the conections of the lajust equipment, because mine has the connection for SERial connection and no computer nowadays have this kind of connection anymore, i really need your help please

  • I have no idea how to sync it with a computer, sorry I only had it for a day.

  • Seems like competitions should ditch these. They just seem so unreliable.

  • pendejo pana es es lo que es usted la misma patada hace

  • another question, there's no point using hands?

  • where is this place? nice dojan!

  • Hi Thanks for the video. Our state tournament as well as the national qualifiers and nationals of course are requiring use of this system but we have had no way to actually use of even see the system. My daughter is a 71 pound 11 year old who will have to move up to the 12-13 year black belt division this year. She is fast and strong but obviously does not have the weight behind the kicks and she tends to use spinning kicks, axe kick and back kicks alot. How well do you think this will work.

  • Well! I have never seen or touched one of these hugos!

I have another question for you. If the whole thing about conversion of pressure to an electric signal is correct then you have to generate a signal greater than a "SET" signal to score! I think these thresholds are set manually. If they are, do coaches check these set points before the fight or I could score easer against you just because my friend in the judges panel has set my set signal higher than yours? u know ...

    Cheers!

  • It sounds like you know much more about these hogus than I. It seemed to me that people were scoring with hard punches at world championships with sensorless gloves, so it is either a completely pressure system, or a hybrid between pressure and conductivity.

The qualities making a back kick harder to score, whatever they are, are not cool. Back kick has been hard enough to get the judges to score as it is.

  • The other question, have you looked into the correlation between the contact area and the likelihood of scoring? I mean, double the force and reduce the kicking area to half,... also, again if my first conjecture is right, then hitting it with a piece of dense wood (not metalic) should score more easily than a back kick. If so, then TKD practitioners may want to consider running on asphalt with no shoes on :) Just getting my mind around it!

Cheers and thanks for the great demonstration.

  • Why do sensors need to be installed on the foot wear and gloves? I thought Piezoeletric materials sense pressure (independent of the source) and convert it to voltage. Also, metal-metal contact is harder than metal-muscle contact. if my first conjecture is true, then that could be why back kicks you showed do not score or you really have to make them hard and "snappy".
