Sorry for the "one person" Blackberry quality, and not being video'd from the shore, which would have been much better to judge speed... I'll be doing this again with a video person, promise! Here I'm using a 44 lb. thrust and a 46 lb. thrust Minn-Kota on the transom, running at the same time. I found that my 12 ft. aluminum fishing boat actually did run faster with the two motors than with just one. (Tech support at Minn-Kota estimated that while the speed wouldn't increase appreciably, the torque and maintenance of speed would be better going against the current, etc.) I estimated 5mph to 7mph easy, on Irvine Lake. Batteries held up for the three hours I was running around, not always using the electrics, but also using my 2hp Eska. (Marine Deep Cycle Batteries from Costco - 120 ampere hour capacity) Minn-Kotas consume approx. 45 amps at 12 volts on high speed, 5 on the tiller.)

  • Steve... I actually do get a few looks with the double Minn Kotas. The Eska was sold shortly after I found the 8hp Envinrude (another video I made). The most impressive and interesting "speed" exhibitions are those where the boat is video'd from either another boat or the shore. And then, you really benefit from a shore landscape. All I had was the Blackberry and myself doing it all. As you alluded, there is a maximum speed based on blade pitch. Although you do get more "torque", so to speak.

  • I am sure someone on the dock looked at your 3 engine setup and did a double take! Thanks for posting the video... yea, 2x engines of course do go a bit faster. The only problem I found, is that the props are setup for about 5 MPH. So even if I put 30x engines on my small boat, still at 5MPH. My experiment in the future is to find a sharper pitch prop to put on the engines to make the engine still thrust at higher speeds.

  • great !
