* I have been trying to find this song in my cd collection for ten months in order to upload it. This is a special upload for me, as well as a truly incredible performance. I remember wanting to show someone this song and not being able to find it on youtube... *

CHUMMING THE OCEANS

South of the river's mouth
Migration slopes slowly towards mainland.
There, the salt air
Fills the gills of the dead bait in hand.

The deep is in riot, the coastline is quiet
Asleep and divided in bands.
While beer halls all revil, drunk and disheveled,
Helplessly wading the diver is down.

And they're chumming the oceans.
The signal is sent,
Recieved and repsonded to.
The water is red, red, red, red.

We're downed, downed as the hand of God
Chokes the driftwood with dead weight and brine.
And spawning the detailed decline
Via dorsal cuts, hooks, sink and line.

The anchors have setlled, the tanks are full level.
The flag has been raised half-mast on the bow.
And harpoons are loaded, the cage has been lowered.
The mask's on, the diver is down, now.

And they're chumming the oceans.
The signal is sent
I think he's in trouble.
The water is red, red, red, red.

  • i prefer the bit shifter version but only because i heard it first, it's hard to migrate from that to the original when you listened to the cover for such a long time. this is still bang on though, a really nice song.

  • Wow this takes me back to better days.

  • Best lyrics ever.

  • Off of live album. Originals from"all the nations airports".

  • Saw Bachmann play this on an out-of-tune piano, in a tiny club in Chinatown, Sydney for about 10 people. Cried my eyes out.

  • thank you Emily, you have pierced my ears with beautiful nostalgia! Anticipating all the talk and action of a fullout reunion!!!

  • the most beautiful thing ever associated with chum

  • One of the best songs ever written.

  • This song is so good... Very happy to have found a live version.

  • @martinezqx3 Thought I was the only AOL fan in Aus! G'day from Brisbane.
