A melaya-for the-stage piece from the 1976 film 'Akhuwatih al-banat' (His Fraternity of Girls or sometimes titled Mohsen's Sisters). The film is the story of a man and his four sisters who live with their conservative aunt. Each sister has her own dreams and one dreams of being a professional dancer.
The melaya is a large, black wrap that was used by women to cover themselves when they left the house. It serves the same purpose as an abaya. Its uncommon now to see women in the cities wearing a melaya.
