'At Santa Barbara'. (Kennedy Russell).
Peter Dawson.
with piano accompaniment by Gerald Moore.

Recorded 20th February, 1928. Issued by HMV; May 28th 1928
A Dance Band Lovers Interlude.

Has it really taken me this long to upload a Peter Dawson record ?. In this case it is fair to repeat the old adage 'the best things come to those who wait'!!. Peter Dawson was one of the first singers that i ever came across on a 78 and ever since those early days i have truly loved this great artist.
A couple of days ago I attempted to list my favourite Dawson records but had to stop very quickly - he never made a bad one and the recorded legacy is far too large to make a sensible decision so frivolously.

This one though has long been a great favourite. This is the kind of song with rousing rhythm, direct tunefulness and that robust self confidence and assertiveness that are the hallmarks of a Peter Dawson record.

Let us bask awhile in the high noon of Empire.

For those who don't know, here goes with a few bits of trivia; Peter Dawson (1882 - 1961) Australian Bass-Baritone. His recording career spanned phonograph cylinders in 1904 to long playing microgrooves and tape reproducers in 1957. He made THOUSANDS of records.

  • I think he did a lot of psueds, even a scottish sounding singer that fooled Harry Lauder of the name Hector Grant on Zonophone.

  • And he was 'Will Strong' and 'Robert Woodville' - a true giant in his field.

  • Peter Dawson is one of my favourite singers and "Santa Barbara" one of my favourite recordings. Thank you for posting it.

  • A rousing tune indeed, I've sung this as it's in one of Peter Dawson's song books; I used to play the record and then have my friend play it on the piano if we had the music for the song, whatever the song may be, we had good fun as I sung baritone so it was easy to be a budding Peter Dawson, the blacksmith singer who was never ashamed of his tattooed arms and became a firm favourite in every continent. He has now joined the internet era, showing great talent never dies. Thanks for the upload.
