I was 16 when this song came out and yes times were hard. At one point there were months of job searching, waiting in long lines with other guys looking for work sweeping floors, pumping gas or anything. But most people were optimistic about the future, and America came out of that recession stronger than ever. What I see around us now is fear, cynicism and possibly a deflationary depression. This is much, much worse and this song is more relevant than ever. Nobody is going to come help us.
