Cash for Clunkers

Let's face it, if you've got a clunker, it's usually because you're unable to afford a new car. I find the same response to this idea everywhere I go.
It goes something like this: "Thanks for offering me £2000 for my old car so I can buy a new one. Now where do I get the remaining £8000 from?"

Thanks for speaking out about this. I like how you systematically explain what is wrong with this program.
I think you make a good point about the free market in which demand rises, how that is supported in a natural way, not simply pumped up by the government. I like how you point out how could this could lead to an inflation then a subsequent deflation of car prices down the road.
I love the points about selfishness & environment. This program is bad for the environment!

YES! "FUCK THE ENVIRONMENT!" I LOVE IT!
I really want to get a bumper sticker that says that.

I agree with you completely dannidandannikins. Poor working people and students NEED those so-called "clunkers" to get to work and college.
Used car dealers are already complaining. The government is destroying the supply of used cars, and now the prices of the remaining used cars are already going up.
Our government is so stupid. The Cash for Clunkers program makes me sick!
This program reminds me a lot of FDR slaughtering pigs in the Great Depression. Dumb dumb dumb.

It's exactly the same idea. Keynesian bullshit.

You don't automatically get $4,500 for a clunker. The car you are turning in has to meet a certain criteria. One of them is getting less than 18 miles per gallon.
New car dealers are ecstatic about this program, of course. Consumers are happy because they can afford a new car sooner than they had planned if they were saving up.
I agree with you though that this is a very stupid idea. Just like any government give-away program, a few people profit & the temporary fix soon dissipates.

cheers for the info, I don't think it changes anything though. If a car gets 17 miles a gallon then it still has value. The government has no right to decide who wins and who loses.
