  • It's well-known!

It's called the sugar-bowl principle - in mixed sugar granules and cubes, cubes are found at the top. Larger items migrate to the top when mixtures are shaken due to simple random processes that favour smaller items. All are being acted on by gravity to force them down. Smaller ones only need a small gap to fall, but larger ones need enough space below them to move down. Shaking makes gaps form, and more of the gaps allow small piece to drop.

  • @saturnGEEK That's completely true. We did it in a physics lesson - Stephen Fry for once is wrong!

  • I always thought it was something to do with the density of the nuts. The more dense it is, the lower in the packet it is.

  • Damn, now I need a packet of mixed nuts...

  • @Camohat100 I have a purple suit like that. It's rather fetching.

  • It's because the bag has been shaken... the same way if you shake a sieve of flour the lumps will come to the top... Not sure why but I know it happens

  • Or the order could have something to do with the density of the nuts.. only a theory..

  • I want that purple suit. I really really want that purple suit

  • @TheThuomas, Yur right, its part of Brownian motion :D

  • Off course you know ! It can be modelled :)
