The Wayfarer sets out on his journey to the Republic of Bashkortostan. There he'll find out how to get power from steppe winds and what horse's milk tastes like. He'll learn about traditional fighting and will perform on stage with local dancers. Martyn Andrews reveals all the particular features of Bashkortostan and its capital, Ufa, in The Wayfarer.

  • USA, Spain, Ireland, Israel, Andorra, Germany... i used to live in so many places, but always wanted to return to Ufa... It can be not very nice... but it is my home.

I will be back. One day i will be back, i promise.

  • Strangely enough, Bashkortostan celebrates its independence from Russia (11 Oct) and joining Russia (12 June). However, the 12 June is also called the Day of Russian Independence and The Day of Russia. It is interesting that the public is not really keen to celebrate any of these. Nevertheless, it is just another holiday. Another point is that all nationalities in Bashkortostan speak Russian language and only elderly people in some Bashkir villages speak Bashkir language only.

  • The presenter more concentrates on Bashkir culture, their religion, sport, etc. in the republic of Bashkortostan. However, there are about 4 million people live in the republic at the moment with 36% of Russian and only 29% of Bashkir. The rest is Tatar (24 %) and other nationalities.

  • big thanks to you, it helped a lot :)
