My favorite Paul Simon song, which is really saying something, as I I like everything he's done. This is a song about nothing, and about absolutely everything, at the same time.
The video was made by the video artist Joan Logue in 1984. It is a piece of art, not an ordinary music video, and therefore it is only found in some art museums and galleries around the world. It is very hard (impossible?) to find a copy with good image quality on the web, and I have not been able to find it on any DVD for sale. Do you, krakenet, have a copy with better quality?
Rene Magritte is a famous surealist. Georgette Magritte was his wife. Our buddy Paul saw a newspaper clipping that was of Rene and Georgette Magritte with their dog "during" the war. For the sake of the music, he changed the title. There are mostly just bits of the song and the music that amuse Paul Simon, like switching to a 3/4 time (waltz) and referencing stopping into a men's store on Christopher St and more. Do a google search & find the same interview, it's interesting.
I actually read a highly-regarded book (although its title eludes me) on the art of Rene Magritte. In it, one photo was captioned, "Rene and Georgette Magritte with their dog". The photo was taken after the war. I believe that the book antedates Paul Simon's song. Regardless, just as Magritte's art is beautiful, so is Paul Simon's song.
