This time I made my way over to Liverpool in western Sydney for their rare method of recycling collection. The unique thing about this particular service is the automated collection of the paper and bottles crates with side loaders.

I shot these clips at midday on a Thursday during my winter holidays in 2008... I decided to make my visit during bottles week. I find it interesting with how residents out there could use recycling containers this small, especially after considering their collection frequency. However at the end of June in 2009, Liverpool's waste contract was renewed which saw the introduction of the 3-bin-system... replacing this previous, out-dated crate system.

Anyway I hope you enjoy this special action, any ratings and comments would be much appreciated. I would also like to give a thanks to the driver, a very kind bloke.

Body Make: Compaction Systems (now Superior Pak)
Model: 29m Sidepak (Recycle Body)
Chassis: International Acco
Council: Liverpool City
Contractor: Remondis
Collection Type: Bottles Recycling

  • 5 stars! have u ever seen a crate dropped in the hopper? i would love to see that! if u ever find an lod battered or vandalised one ask the driver if heel pack it for you

  • Nar I haven't, first time I ever saw this. Just about every crate in the council is battered! lol

  • Awesome find Mitch!!! Sorry I didn't get to watch this sooner. Love the unique system! Funny how he lifted the bin at 4:49! I like seeing how he just drops the crate once empty, much like manual collection!!! This method works if there aren't a lot of recyclables in the crate, but if it's overloaded like many are, it's not so efficient (but still fun to watch). How do they handle replacement/extra crates? Is it free? Seems like they'd tend to crack. Anyways this one's a total favorite & feature!

  • You're right about being reasonably full/overflowing - just really interested to know how the residents out there live with crates and their collection rate.

As for extra crates, it appears you can't get extras + I took a look at the council site and there wasn't any mention about extras. This seems to be the reason why residents use both recycling crates, whether containers week or paper week... that'd be the situation when you see a blue and black one out at certain points in the video...

  • With replacement crates I'm pretty sure they've be free, as in most cases it wouldn't be the residents fault if it gets stolen or damaged (usually by the truck)... if I remember correctly, they're provided by the contractor. Thanks for the fav n' feature :D

  • they have crates at botany bay council for recycling

  • Yer the only ones I can think of would be Botany Bay, Woollahra, North Sydney, City of Sydney and I believe there are small amounts in Leichhardt.
