I've sung this song many times, and the bartender at Smokin' Joes in Wheat Ridge, CO (www.smokinjoesbar.com) becomes upset if I don't do this song at some point while I'm there. So this was dedicated to her. I never liked Pocket Full Of Gold (Gill, 1991), or much country music for that matter, while growing up. I was more into alternative rock and maybe even a little rap (gasp!). I remember my stepmother had the album on cassette, and there were times when I would play it occasionally on her old silver stereo system, wondering why my parents liked this music. It wasn't until much later that country music began to have an intense and profound meaning for me, particularly through the music of Alison Krauss (and AK&US of course), the initial influence for which I have my aunt to thank. I have to admit, I can't quite croon as well as Vince, nor with as much country twang, but I do feel like I do the song justice, and put heart into it where I seldom see it when this song is performed.
