In 2008-2009, Katie Rains served as a Young Adult Volunteer through the PC(USA) in Peru where she worked with the Peruvian Joining Hands Against Hunger's fair trade project, Bridge of Hope. After her return to the US, she became a resident volunteer at Stony Point Conference Center, one of the PC(USA)'s three national conference centers, which houses the Community of Living Traditions, a multifaith community dedicated to nonviolence and peace building. On July 11, 2011, after a demonstration held in Lafayette Park, Rains stood with four others in an act of civil disobedience to bring light to the seriousness of the Colombia Free Trade Agreement and was arrested for that action.
