Arizona in Cold Blood - Spiders can make you jump

On a deserted Route 66, we stopped to have a look at a spider crossing the road. I wanted to make sure he crossed the road properly but he wasn't too happy to have any help...

I believe this is a Red Rumped Desert Tarantula.

Thats an Aphonopelma calchodes aka The Dessert blonde or Arizona blonde tarantula. It's a mature male because males lose the blonde colour on the legs after the mature molt. Plus there is also a set of tibial hooks on the front pair of legs which they use for mating. Just incase your intrested and by the way they're not that bad lol!

Hi Ben looks like you did the right thing there, that spider looked prety p****d, his abdomen was raised, and he looked ready to use his defence mechanism by flicking hairs!
