Smetana´s music is beautiful and expressive being sung in any language. (And from such singers!) Though sometimes the music is bound to the original czech libretto (mainly in recitatives I would say) and then the translation should be perhaps more reflecting this.

Hahahah! Having sung this show in Czech, English, and German (sigh), I could not agree with you more. BTW Talvela WAS one of the great basses of his day...

Na ja aber das Libreto ist etwas eingeartig. Ich kann mich nicht helfen aber ich höre da ab und zu Deutsch, (6:05). Alles ist es sehr schwer zu verstehen, die tschechische Version, ach wenn gesungen, ist verständlich. Das war auch die Idee "eine Geschichte aus dem Volk dem Volk zu erzählen" und zwar so einfach und begreifbar wie nur möglich. Na ja früher hat man es so gesagt jetzt wäre eher angebracht Heiratsschwierigkeiten eines Hatz 4 Empfänger in nem Dorf auf dem Land :o)

Die Verkaufte Braut (Prodaná nevěsta)ist englisch gesungen, weil sie Smetana in tschechisch gesrieben hat und diese Urauffuehrung in New York inzeniert hat.

Speaking as someone who saw this production in the house...it was one of most wonderful productions the Met ever did. And I thought Talvela was marvelous and his crazy accent adorable.
