Farmer Moving South is one of the finest early British Transport Films, in which we follow a farmer's relocation from Skutterskelf Hall Farm, near Stokesley in North Yorkshire, to Perry Hill Farm, Hartfield, Sussex on the 31st December 1950, - a date recorded as the coldest night of that year.
Stokesley Station, on the North Yorkshire & Cleveland railway's Picton to Battersby line, opened in 1857 and closed to passenger traffic in 1954. Freight services ended in 1965. The station building, signal box, goods shed and Stationmaster's house all survive in private ownership - see http://www.subbrit.org.uk/sb-sites/stations/s/stokesley/index.shtml
Hartfield Station, on the London Brighton & South Coast Railway's Three Bridges to Tunbridge Wells line, opened in 1866 and closed to passenger traffic in 1967. Freight services ended in 1962. The station building still exists as a private residence - see http://www.subbrit.org.uk/sb-sites/stations/h/hartfield/index.shtml
Great film! My thought is that the coldest day is prolly lots better than the warmest day

Perry Hill farm where they were moving was farmed by my 4th Great Grandfather, Abraham Spencer (1751 - 1839) and his wife Fanny (Leney). I'm not sure if they "owned" the farm, or if his predecessors or descendants farmed it. Today the farm is a large Nursery in lovely, quiet countryside.

Can anyone tell me why these farmers were relocated like this? I should be very grateful for an answer. Thanks in advance...

Fascinating video.
I don't know how often these farm relocations occurred, but I do know there was one from Tetbury to Scotland in around 1961.
