@stewartx5 Unfortunately, I'm not quite a youth anymore. And I think the school is there to serve the public of california, who are getting less, paying more, and being priced out of an affordable education. UC fees have increased 150% in the last decade, and the ranks of 6-figure salaried admin keep expanding. At least don't belittle the staff and students in the video above, who care, more than admin, about the PUBLIC university

@am123212 I realise you think the school is there to serve you and you alone (youth thinks that way), but the school must be there ten years from now and twenty after that. Classrooms must be remodeled and new equipment purchased. Buildings must be built or expanded to meet the needs of an ever growing California population. Those are the realities, and it all requires money. UCLA is a great school, which is probably why you're there. Great schools are expensive to operate. Got to go. Take care.

@stewartx5 The UC has laid off massive amounts of workers, cut the pay of faculty (in many cases inducing them to leave), and raised fees for students by 30% in one year. The least they can do is show us (students and ALL TAXPAYERS) how they're spending our money, no? And why, when they can secure $6 BILLION in loans to fund construction projects, they can't cover a $800 million budget gap? When vague "equipment" costs take precedence over students and teachers at a SCHOOL, we have a problem.

@am123212 '.. "intelligent" solutions have been proposed ..'
Try putting yourself in place of the administration. Costs (equipment, supplies, etc) are going up nation-wide, yet income for the school isn't. A transparent budget isn't going to change that. So-called reserves are intended to fund future needs (repairs, remodeling, etc), so redirecting those funds would only create shortages later (a shortsighted approach). Like it or not, fees must be increased occasionally.

@stewartx5 many "intelligent" solutions have been proposed to fee increases. These include making the budget transparent to students and taxpayers, using the billions of dollars in reserves that the UC has to cover the supposed budget gap, and not using tuition increases as collateral for construction bonds. The administration refuses to listen to the concerns of the faculty, students, or staff and instead declares "emergency powers" to push through fee increases. So who's being childish?

Shame on those in the crowd for such a lame chant. Instead of this simplistic, child-like, nonsense, why not come up with something more intelligent? After all, you're supposed to be college, not middle-school, students.
