How to take down an animal when you are working alone. PB was just starting to learn to hold cattle while I am dismounted.

  • How old is your horse when you start doing this?

  • You start teaching him to hold cattle and to tie off as soon as you start him on roping. But you would sure want to have him mentally and physically mature before you asked him to hold down big cattle or to help you do this regularly, where you would really be depending on him to help keep you safe and the cow safe. That would be around 7 or 8 when you have him going good in the bridle and he knows how to ground tie well.

  • This was part of a second Californio style ranch roping demo I did at the first ever P(enn)NHA Horseman's Extravaganza in 2005 at the Westmoreland County Fairgrounds in SW PA.

  • Its a nice change to see the finesse it took to gently put that calf down. Ive only seen the rodeo calf roping that seems a little harsh to me.

  • nice job. i really dont know what ur doing, cause id only do team roping and cutting, but still nice job!!!

  • Muy Bueno indeed, Bob. Where was this clinic?
