Hardy azaleas should be pruned in the middle of winter while the plant is dormant, and it should be trimmed back no more than one-third of the plant size into a circular or ball shape. Trim back hardy azaleas to encourage more blossoms for the following year with instructions from a sustainable gardener in this free video on gardening.

  • Sorry this is not correct way to prune. Do not prune in the Winter. Very confusing info.

  • I disagree with you about the pruning time. Pruning in the winter cuts off all the buds for that year, and it won't bloom. And pruning in the summer is much more likely to stress the plant, and it won't have time to put on new buds for next year. If we followed your advice, our azaleas would never bloom! Also, there's nothing wrong with pruning while it's blooming, except it shortens the time you can enjoy the blooms. But it's actually a very good time to prune for the health of the plant.

  • Do not prune Encore Azaleas this way. Not all azaleas are Deciduous!!
