I struggled with the meaning of this song for a very long time because my father left me on the side of the highway somewhere in California when I was very young never to be seen again. That was 47 years ago. God to me then has become the father of the fatherless and somehow also the mother of the motherless. He has made it my job now to be sure my children never know what that feels like.
