Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers questions from off of his Guitar Blog website...

Q). I recently read about a concept called "Ladder Licks" on a guitar discussion forum, but nobody there really discussed exactly what they are. So, I was wondering and hoping if maybe you'd heard of Ladder Licks, and if you did hear of these, if you could maybe explain what they are?
Tim -- Staten Island, NY. United States

A). The term "Ladder Licks" can be explained as an effect of going outside the melodic & harmonic structure of a key that a chord progression is from. So, think of it as a way to go from one stable idea over to another by way of a detour from the concentrated notes of the key center. Whenever one of these ladder licks are applied they always appear with one common trait and that is they have very little melodic value -- instead what they do is literally stop the listener in their tracks and have them think something to the effect of, "Whoa, what the heck was that?" Now, let's zoom into the neck and look at this a little bit further... There are some common points you'll want to consider with using ladder licks. 1). The ladder lick does not relate to the key you're in. 2). They're primarily fingering patterns, so apply them as modular geometrical ideas upon the fingerboard. 3). They are to be performed with total confidence, or they'll sound like you just played a bunch of really wrong notes and people will think you are a lousy guitarist, instead of a hip outside player!

  • Wicked lesson. RE: miterour, with the ladder lick you're taking the tonal centre out of the listeners ear. Wherever you end, land with a running start and it'll sound good. Whether it's a break in playing the same key or a modulation

  • but....Will it blend?

  • nice one andrew! very useful!! thanks again 4 all U'r great work!
