Sights and sounds on Dublin's Luas trammway.

The trams are a version of the hugely successful Alstom Citadis. The Luas is international standard gauge (1435mm/4'8 1/2") rather than the unusual broad gauge (1600mm/5'3") of the rest of Ireland's railways. This made cost savings in the purchase of of-the-shelf equipment and opens Dublin up to the second hand tram market.

The word luas is Irish Gaelic for speed. Early publicity for the scheme also had luas as a highly contrived acronym; this was quickly dropped. The name was originally intended for the system, but "luas" is now also used as a new Irish word for tram.

P.S. "hello" to the driver on 3014.
