it´s not very common to see a sump in a freshwater aquarium but after buying one rena filstar xp1 and later a xp3 i still was not very happy with the flow rate and space to put media,so instead of buying filters i decided to make a sump and increase the flow rate with 2 pumps and use the a bigger space to put media,i used a 47 gallon aquarium(180 Liters)

  • I was wondering why you had fish in your sump. But then I realized, This is your aquarium!!

  • ynh954,this is not my tank, this is a 40 gallon tank i used as a sump to filter the water for my main 100 gallon tank i have above, the fish i have here are only waiting for a friend of mine to get some space in his tank for them, they will be a lot easyer to catch here than in the main tank :)

  • Can you eplain to me how its not common to see a fresh water set up with a sump?

  • Yippe,a sump has many advatages and although im not using one right now i liked the idea very much and hope to get one working soon. One of the reasons(there are lots of them more) is to hide the equipment(calcium reactors, refugiums and protein skimmers to name just a few)and maybe for that reason its not very common to see a freshwater setup with a sump because there is no need to use that equipment.

  • dude what a waste u got a tiny little tANK..

  • cheese0rdie,the tank that i made in the sump has aproximately 15 gallons and i have seen tanks smaller but the sump was filtering water for a 100 gallon tank (main tank)and i know its not the biggest tank i have ever seen but i would not say that a 100 gallon is "tiny little tank"

  • so its a build in sump with the aquarium? thats cool!

  • I'm running a "veggie fuge" for extra nitrate removal/less filtration devices and it's actually alot of fun to see how it works and where to place what. I have 2x29gal and 2x10 gal, each larger tank is to overflow into the smaller. The video response I posted was just a quick setup to show a forum member what I was begining. Tonight I turned the 10 gal into a "Plenum", where my overflow pipe goes below the substrate (like a reverse undergravel) and then into lower chamber return! Nice sump!

With freshwater you don't have there do you?

  • People don't seem to like this but I find it to be a very creative DIY project. It's something different. I'd like to have this sump/tank thing built myself.

  • interesting experiment you have going on.

  • vert unatractive.

  • I agree, looks way too messy and complicated for something that should be pretty simple.

If i were you, I'd breed guppies in the bottom and use the fry for live food in my main tank.
