The Division of Homeland Security & Emergency Management called upon the Alaska National Guard to assist in disaster relief for the snow buried city of Cordova.
The city requested support after a series of winter storms dropped nearly 18 feet of snow in the region.
Nineteen hours after the mission was handed to them, the Alaska National Guard was assembled with necessary gear, independent of the community, and on its way to Cordova.
Operation "Deep Dig" commenced on Jan. 9, 2012, under the direction of the incident commander in Cordova. City leadership provided a priority list of buildings that needed to be cleared to the Alaska National Guard who split into squads to execute the mission.
The Alaska National Guard cleared roads, boats, and prevented the loss of many city and residential buildings during Operation "Deep Dig."
