Independent Television Service for Wales and the West was a holding service because the franchise holder TWW went bust and couldn't carry on.

@Feisty1967 Erm, I liked Richard courtesy of Countdown. I think the present ITV1 setup stinks. Just when I found out how to obtain every ITV1 region in England, and HTV Wales on SKY, they all merge into this bland identity. Yes, I do like the odd network programme which STV doesn't show, but I miss a lot of the other regional programmes on Tuesdays and Thursdays if I remember correctly. At least UTV and STV have kept their identities though I wasn't pleased at STV for killing off Grampian.

Personally, I'm glad the regions have gone. Yorkshire TV was and always has been boring as fuck, it produced Richard Whitely for fuck sake. It's much better now with the generic look.

Back to the good old day of quality television....thanks for sharing this.

UTV and Channel both still exist and both are still independent. They're current ITV regional stations, not former.

At least we still have the Stv logo on screen up here, in some shape or form. I feel sorry for a lot of the other regions, and personally miss: Thames, HTV, LWT, and many others. The old ATV ident makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up (in a good way!), but Southern (which I think we used to see before Worzel Gummidge back in the late 70s/early 80s) always spooked me for some reason. Nevertheless, happy days. Thanks for this :)

Yes it was Maggie that did it as she did for much else.

ITV are sitting on a gold mine! And they are blissfully unaware of it! This comment is copywright (and all spellings of it!)
ITV merging all the seperate regional companies was said at the time to be the only option for ITV to survive in a multi channel environment. But, ironically, had the regional companies survived it would probably be stronger as it would be unique, not just another national entertainment channel like Sky 1.
N.B. It wasn't Granada/Carlton who killed off regional ITV but Maggie Thatcher in the 1992 franchise bidding war when Thames/TVS/TSW etc all lost out.

The exciting thing was staying in a new ITV area and watching something different. The progs. were better and the regional staff were more involved. That's what counted.
