Swiss German Colours (Vocab)

red - rot
orange - orange
yellow - gäl
white - wiis
fawn/beige - beige
brown - bruun
black - schwarz
green - grüen
blue - blau
purple - violett
(neon) pink - pink
pink - rosa
grey - grau
silver - silbrig
gold - goldig

dark - dunkl
light - hell

e.g. dark green - dunklgrüen, light yellow - hellgäl etc.

Is there a Swiss German word or idiom related to a color for feeling "blue", meaning sad. I know there's a word for sad, but i am curious if a color is associated to it.

Are any colors used to express things like that?

In English, we use "green" to say someone is inexperienced.

Yellow indicates cowardness.

Green with envy.

Seeing red when angry.

Show one's true colors.

@robbiedaug yep, i know all those expressions in english. :) we do have similar ones in SG.

er isch grüen worde vor niid - lit.: he became green with envy.

blau machä - means to chuck a sickie.

rot vor wuet - seeing red when angry

d welt dur e rosaroti brülä gseh - to see something through rose-coloured glasses

and so on :) i don't think there's one that says "i'm feeling blue" tho.

At least orange is indeed SO French :) hehehe... now, one thing that has not change, I still LOVE the earings wohooooo. Beige.. (French hehehe).. I love yellow though, sounds so Gaellic.. oh, there it goes again.. violet indeed :) So it is like a good mix or origin :) . Dark is quite hard to pronounce even for me.. :)

@helow98 fanchhhh. yeh, since switzerland is right next to france and we even have a french part, we have borrowed a lot of words from french :D we sometimes say "salü" for salut and "ade" for adieu too :D
