I do not know how to use a MAC.
You lock the references when you do not want them to move throughout a copy action. It is one of the most fundamental ideas in Excel. See these video title:

I'm running into a problem: I tried to hit F4 to lock in the range, but F4 instead worked as a "paste" function. I have a Mac. Is that the issue?
Also, what is the reason for locking the range? Thanks!

The formula would not work if you did not. Try it without it and copy it down and see what it does - then lock it and see what it does. Here is a video all about the different types of Cell references:
