This aurora time lapse(northern lights) was filmed on the night of 5/15/2005 from KY. It would be longer, but my batts died from taking so many long-exposure snapshots (each frame is 10 second exposure).

  • I am from eastern KY and I have seen the northern lights 3 separate times. Two times it was reddish like in your pictures and only in one small patch of sky. The other and best one I saw was bright colors green, blue and red. It was huge that night. It was across the whole northern horizon. It was just like you see in the videos from alaska. Many people reported seeing it that night. I cannot remember the exact date.

  • This particular event was capture during the solar maximum of May '05. Look in the comments below for a URL to other views of the event (over about a month-long period). There are a few images in there from Tennessee that resemble mine. I do believe there were some other "outbreaks" that I did not get on film, which may be what you are describing. The last solar maximum was one for the record books. Thanks for watching!

  • Western KY, but it was seen all across the US. It occured here on 5/15/2005 at 3:30 in the morning, so you might've been in bed. You can see more images from other people here - spaceweather (dot) com / aurora / gallery_01may05_page2 (dot) htm . YouTube doesn't like links in the comments apparently, so that's why I put in in there like that. You'll have to piece the url together yourself.

  • A rare treat to see them in that color, even here in Alaska green is what we get 90% of the time.

  • this is incredible, do you know if they come down to penn? and may i ask when was this taken?

  • I saw Aurora once in Wisconsin. You're usually lucky if you can see it in the lower 48.

  • I love purple!

  • DANG! That's AWESOME! Have never seen the aurora - but want to, very much - beautiful capture, didn't know they got that bright outside of Alaska or the Northern climes. Well done, adding to favorites (and subscribing to you) -
