The ending of Star Trek the original series was presented with Star Trek VI The Undiscovered Country. During this piece the crew of the Enterprise are all in realization that their journey is over (with the exception of Sulu who is Captain on another ship) and it includes the 8 note fanfare created by Alexander Courage. It's a lovely theme and it's apparent that it's inspired by "The Firebird" where as the "Overture" was more inspired by "Mars, The Bringer of War". It's unfortunate that it isn't heard much through out the movie and it only appears four times during the entire film ; the first being scene when the Enterprise if first leaving space dock, and the second being is during the scene with spock and kirk called dining on ashes. The third is where they've been given orders that they will be decommissioned, and then during the end credits.

Goldsmith, and Horner used their main themes for the Enterprise heavily through out the films they scored but this was rarely used. It may be due to the dark nature of this movie and that Myers wanted something very different from any of the other scores created for Star Trek up to that point. Either way it's a solid theme which may not be as memorable as Goldsmith's but it's certainly a theme that will bring a tear to any Star Trek fan.

The theme plays over the final moments when we see James Tiberius Kirk, in command of the Enterprise as he quotes Peter Pan. The theme continues to play over the signatures of each person of the original cast of Star Trek and it concludes after Shatner's signature.

  • Actually, it's played 4 times. also during the scene with spock and kirk called dining on ashes.

  • Yes this is true, I'll make the correction. Thank you for pointing that out.

Lol. Someone had to say it.

    Great track :)

  • I like this song, it's the perfect ovation to the original cast headed by William Shatner's Kirk. Note how the music starts off with a "well, everything's back to normal, kick back and relax" melody before drooping into a somber, sad crawl - then all of a sudden Alexander Courage's legendary TV theme - the one that makes us all loved classic ST kicks in. Music then raises, sounds adenturous and full of energy before an resounding cresendo - its says onwards, adventure will continue! Wow!

  • I am thankful that I grew up watching the original Star Trek's, Lost in Space, and other various older TV shows/movies. My father had many of them recorded or purchased and watched them all the time. These shows are FAR better then the crap they had on when I was growing up, and what is on right now.

  • Curious note: This is the last video i am viewing with the old YouTube layout, so in some ways, this song is a goodbye to the old YouTube ^_^

  • @horaciosi Never, ever relate something as amazingly epic like Star Trek, with something so overly hyped about, and yet stupid as Harry Potter again.

  • Ah. I remember sitting in the theater in disbelief as the Enterprise vanished into the light. There will never be another crew like the original.

  • TOS came to and end....? Whoops, then so did Star Trek!

  • I like to think that this is the Star Trek equivalent of Deathly Hallows part 2.

  • This...This piece gives me goosebumps. The only thing that pops into my head when I hear this is "What can top it?" Answer: "Nothing". JJ's little foray into this franchise is insignificant compared to the power of the Shatner and crew. I'd rather watch "Threshold" over and over again instead of JJ's _Trek_ jaunt.

  • "This is the final cruise of the Starship Enterprise under my command. This ship and her history will shortly become the care of another crew. To them and their posterity will we commit our future. They will continue the voyages we have begun, and journey to all the undiscovered countries, boldly going where no man... where no *one* has gone before. "

  • Hard to explain for an 80s kid, but Star Trek ended with this.

  • This. THis was the best ending the Crew could get. The unfortunately cut ending of Nemesis was also awesome. It's on Youtube somewhere.
