Focus' album Moving Waves was released in 1972. Its opening track made the band famous. "Hocus Pocus" became so popular that it was issued again (in an edited version) in 1972 and 1973. In 1973, while recording for a new album, Focus re-arranged and re-recorded "Hocus Pocus" at a faster tempo for release in the USA.

This doesn't sound like any of the versions I recall, and I heard the original album cut on WNEW-FM in New York (which at the time was one of the original underground FM, 'real' rock stations). I also heard the original single edit on WABC-AM, which at the time was owned by the same company that also held ABC Records, the record label distributing the album and single in the US!

The New York radio stations never played any "sped-up" version; just either the full album cut or the edited single.

They were wrongly advised to do a short version for American radio but the long europe version is best, they got it right 1st time.
