Documenting the decline in commercial properties being actively occupied as of the end of 2010. Representative of Main Street -- which means this is not as bad as it gets nowadays -- side streets are even emptier.

i think a lot of this has to do with the leasing policies of california commercial investments. i started a business in oakland last year and was unable to lease any spaces from them, and they control a large percentage of oakland's commercial real estate, especially in the area you focus on.

oakland is doing better than i ever remember, if you can imagine that. there are new businesses everywhere, but lots closing too.
