Spandau Ballet play their famous song Gold at Tubridy Tonight show 23/05/2009. For better quality watch it at http://www.rte.ie/tv/tubridytonight/ (you need real player).
Let me say some technical stuff (for what is my capacity). However, my final vote is that they are a great live band.
I believe in some part is better than the one at Jonathan Ross but in other is better the JR performance (it's only my opinion). The speed maybe is a bit slow, but maybe at JR it was a bit fast :)

Listen to Tony' high at the end of the song. Even if he laughs at a point of the song, but I don't know what he's seen, but he's funny). Great, great voice.

Gary has good sound and touch, and the solo is the same of 1986 but with a more updated sound, more stratocaster with less overdrive than 86, but I prefer guitar volume at JR as for the volume of second voices.

Martin (who has forgotten a note just after the first chorus and so there's a moment of emptiness, but just a momento, nothing bad) bass line gives much to the song (without it you can't hear the song).

John always plays very exciting and I like it very much for tht.

Finally Steve sax in more part of the song is very elegant.

  • Grazie a te trifiz.

  • why the drummer has got a double bass set? Is he Gene Goglan??

  • Perhaps you mean Gene Hoglan. Lot of drummer uses double drum kick live even if they use it very rarely. Perhaps also for redundant reasons. John Keeble is a good drummer, not a death metal drummer with a speed 4/4 drum kick, but a good drummer. He's right for the SB songs.

  • Hi guys, I didn't think putting this video on youtube would have done this (sorry for my english, but I'm not english).

Lemonexpress, obviously you can think and say Tony is struggling, probably we have to consider two things: 1. He's will to show what he is, his technique, to great audience. 2. He used to be on tour as single with a band as support not as a band, so he probably has to fix something before get on tour with the other guys. I'll continue in another comment...

  • @palladinevemarcia : it is because "Spandau Ballet"doesn't fit on a single bassdrum...

  • this is still brilliant!

  • The voice of Tony are wonderful!!!!!! congratulation!!!! I love this band.

  • I would agree that he doesn't sound good here.

That being said, he sounded FANTASTIC at the Isle of Wight show & on this song. It was one of his best live performances ever IMO. Check it out, it's on YouTube.

  • Sat through that episode of Tuberware tonight just to see these guys. Well worth it!

  • Another supposed flash in the pan that still sounds fantastic over twenty years later! Tony especially, keep rockin!
