I explain how to do this in my book Dogs Can Sign, Too. First you teach the move, then cue it, then associate the meaning. Then, you can test by asking the dog What's That? with the object there. That is how language begins. It's up to the dog to decide (if s/he can) to take it to the next level of communication.

Great suggestion, one we are working on actually. Aiming for a 2-3 minute video of a conversation, some spontaneous and some just having a lesson, interaction.

as opposed to doing single 3 second videos, could you share with us a slight conversation with your dog (so to speak). It seems likely one could train a dog to do these actions when x item is placed in its eye sight.

I suppose Im asking if you could you share with us a test of sorts?
