what time of year is best to go? My great grandfather was the judge and I thought it would be cool to see the tunnel. Just moved here. Didn't know we were allowed to see the tunnel without a guide.

go to the Mt Ashland turnoff. If you go straight you'll go to Mt Ashland. If you turn left, you go to the Motel/Restaurant. If you go to the right and park next to the road, you'll see a trail going over to the train tracks. It's only about 100 yards to the tunnel.
