Everybody Draw Mohammed Day (2010)

What's this, why I did it?

This is a drawing done by me (yeah, I suck at art, I know) of the prophet of Islam, Muhammad (a.k.a. Muhammed or Mohammed).

Why do I care about a guy who died centuries ago? I don't. I care about today's Muslims, some of which send death threats to people that draw Muhammad or criticize Islam.

So I did this to commemorate May 20, 2010, the first annual "Everybody Draw Mohammed Day" (search it on Google) which is, as Wikipedia puts it: "a protest against Islamists who threaten violence against individuals that attempt to depict Muhammad. It originally began as a protest against censorship of South Park episode "201" by Comedy Central in response to death threats from radical Islamists.".

If you're curious about technical details: I drew the thing using only vector graphics and converted it to a 39-seconds lossless AVI (with 1920x1080 25 fps MPNG video and 44.1 kHz 2 channels uncompressed PCM audio). That's 24.2 Mbits/s for the video, not bad considering that it's 1080p lossless. I used "optipng -o7" followed by "advdef -z4" to compress the PNG frame. YT accepted this AVI (119 MiB) without complaining. :-)

BTW just yesterday YouTube started converting all new videos 720p or better to WebM, so this should be one of the first videos available in this new format!

The audio is from the pop song "Ti amo ti amo" by Italian artist Alexia ("ti amo" in Italian means "I love you").

In Islam its unacceptable to have images or statues of living beings drawn, displayed etc, especially with illustrations of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). This is the reason why the illustrations are insensitive and disrespectful to the Muslims. It is universally acceptable that we should all respect and be sensitive to peoples beliefs and religion, so why should it be any different now.

I don't want people to do that and I think the best way to make them stop is to do the exact opposite of what they want.

If me and many other people respond to them by drawing Muhammad, maybe those Muslims extremists next time will think twice before threatening anyone.

BTW, I disagree that we should respect people's beliefs. Some of them are ridiculous. E.g. the talking snake in the Bible. Should I respect that?

@mouradmikomi The freedom of free speech is far more important than Islam itself. As the civilized world evolved we learned to understand the meaning of true value.
