It's actually better to punch and taper. There's nothing wrong with a taper, after the punch there usually isn't much sensation of the taper moving through the new hole and new piercings are more easily stretched than you think.
I have a 00 gauge lip plug, originally pierced with a 2ga needle and stretched inmmediately following with a 0ga taper. Nostrils punched with 4ga and stretched with 2ga taper. Learn your shit asswipe.
