The IAAF World Cup of Walking is a biennial road race competition between nations that has been held under different names and with varying formats since 1961. Men compete in the 20Km and 50Km events and women now compete in the 20Km, although in 1987 the event was 10Km. The winner of the Cup is determined by a complicated scoring system based on the top 3 finishers of the 5 participants allowed from each country in each event.

The 1987 World Cup was held May 2 and 3, 1987 in New York City's Central Park. The dominance of Eastern bloc countries was evident as all but two of the top three finishers in each event came from East Germany or Russia.

The Women's 10Km event featured many of the top walkers of the 1980's and early 1990's including Kerry Saxby (#257), future Olympic medalist Yelena Nikolayeva (#401) and winner Olga Khristop (#399) who set a world record on this day that would be bested later that year by Saxby.

Likewise, the Men's 20Km was a record setting event with winner and future Olympic medalist Carlos Mercenario (#593) bettering the existing mark on his 20th birthday. So much for seasoning of champions. Also in the race were Olympic medalists Ernesto Canto (#592) and Maurizio Damilano (#576) who today chairs the IAAF walking committee.

  • Not going for speed, I feel better racewalking than running. In a competition is very hard. Lungs and heart works less than running (you cant go to the limit of your body because of the technique rules), but you feel more pain in your legs.

Mercenario had his birthday that day May 3rd 1987 in Central Park NY, 20 yrs old. Was 1 day off to become the unique junior winning a major world championship.

I was Mercenario's teamate in 1989, great person.

  • It's a very difficult and so tough sports of great ancient tradition, in which certain anglosaxon cunts ( aussies excluded ) have always been too weak & crappy to do something , probably due to its inner too difficult technic ( no wonder of that , the anglosaxon are rude bulls so can't compete in sports involving a bit of technics ) .

Underrating those sports in which the anglosaxon morons can't succeed : how typical from the US / UK child brains :-) !
