A short snippet of footage from the 1906 Australian silent feature considered to be the first example of a feature film in the world.

The story concerns the exploits of Australia's most famous bushranger: Ned Kelly.

  • Technically the first I guess, but not really the first. Not by a long shot. Sorry Australia.

  • @IamWormFood The Story of the Kelly Gang is the first recorded dramatic feature film, and not only on a technicality. Serials where the sum of all its parts is the equivalent of a feature film do not count and records of sporting events are by no means dramatic. The rest is semantics. 40 minute films are referred to as short features and are rarely given cinema release. It may seem strange to people nowadays, but prior to the first world war, Australia was a prolific film making country.

  • @IamWormFood so i suppose your American, and you think your industry made the first films. But it was the British.

  • @yourvidisbad101 So repackaging someone else's invention and selling it to the public counts as invention? Advances were made that allowed the safer and more efficient production of refigerators, but the invention process was over well before then.

It's not a competition. I was just pointing out a fundamental flaw in his assertion.

The Nazis were never in the pacific, by the way. You mean the Japanese.

  • @sestsa actually, the real modern refirgerator that people use nowadays was invented by the Americans in the 1950's.

Also, had it not been for us, you would currently be living under Soviet or Nazi rule.

  • @yourvidisbad101 Was that a troll attempt or are you just an idiot? Television and the lightbulb are arguably US inventions, but the first practical refrigerator and ice maker was an Australian invention (James Harrison in 1857). The first absorption refrigerator after that was invented by Swedes.

  • @sestsa really? ha! well, lets see now

    America's FIRSTS

    -Refrigerator

    -Television

    -Lightbulb

    three right off the bat.

  • @Seanrobison08 most of the worlds greatest discoveries were discovered hundreds of years before the usa even existed ya stupid bitch haha what an ignorant american retard ( i also like how you think that because someone who was also american did something great other americans seem to try and latch on like they had some input into the creative process )

  • The U.S. film industry lagged behind because of Thomas Edison. He owned all of the patents relevant to motion picture production. That's why the industry moved out to California (Also, good weather and longer days). If Edison sent agents to find them and sue they would flee to Mexico.

  • You are correct. Did some more research.

The first feature film ever made was The Story of the Kelly Gang, an Australian film based on the infamous Ned Kelly. In 1906 Dan Barry and Charles Tait of Melbourne produced and directed The Story of the Kelly Gang, a silent film that ran continuously for a breathtaking 80 minutes. It was not until 1911 that countries other than Australia began to make feature films. By this time Australia had made 16 full-length feature films.
