So basically, this video is a better version of the one this is a response to, My Birds playing in the grass. This video starring my cockatiels Sunny, Speckles, Crackers and Cinnamon & budgies Shady and Misty, was subject to much controversy, over whether trimming/clipping of their wings is a good or bad idea. Here is a chance for everyone to have their say, and share personal stories/preferences. This video is also a better version, I got a new camera (yay!) which has sound, so the videos I have put together are better quality. So feel free, have your say, what is it for you? to trim, or not to trim?

Please, no abusive language but discussion and debating is great, so go for it!

btw - As you can probably tell, I am all for wing trimming, my birds can have the freedom of being outside, and inside with the peace of mind that they won't be able to fly away or get themselves injured.

  • I would say it depends of the bird as well.

I have a nice cockateil and she doesn't need to be trimmed. She simply doesn't fly away from me -yes she can and yes she can run away someday, however, I don't believe so.-

Now, i agree some birds are not that connected with their "owners" -hate that word when talking about a fella. So probably some birds will need to be trimmed since they will no doubt in running away.

Question, if you let me ask; what's that cage? -It's...HUGE, that's why :D-

  • yeah thanks for your opinion, I am just trying to find out the general concensus of all bird owning youtubers out there. haha yes, their cage is huge, it's an aviary, so it's on a concrete slab in the backyard, haha yeah the birds love it in there :)

  • I would say it depends on the bird, do you birds fly well or crash into things? Are the connected to you or scared shitless, Ive a budgie and he flys well and comes to me so I think I wont clip he's wings ;) if however he flew like a dickhead and was scared I might of clipped them for his own safety

  • i think clipping a birds wings is like painlessly cutting of a persons legs. Leaving them to crawl with their arms

  • I rescue and rehabilitate parrots to the wild in Australia. These are Australian cockatiels. Most advice you were given here is nonsense. Your aviary is beautiful and you obviously love the birds to supply it. Good on ya! Disabling a bird to make it dependent on you is cruel and can cause sometimes cause depression. It also messes with the natural pecking order. Birds are happiest when they can fly and be all they were created to be. Stamp the birds' wings with your name and number instead.

  • for the safety of you and your bird, i would trim its wings, first it'll make the birds more dependent on you and it'll keep them from flying away or flying into something..i personally would trim their wings.

  • There is a lot of misinformation about flighted birds. Birds that were once clipped and become flighted can be a serious problem because they don't have the strength or skill to fly safely. My macaw was clipped as a baby and though never clipped again in 6 years, never learned to fly. My grey and sun conure where flighted since babies and fly very well. My sun has just been introduced to free flight outdoors. I hope to get the grey trained for it in the future. It really depends.

  • yeah right

  • Since my birds have a whole room to themselves and never leave the safety of their perch, it depends on each bird and honestly how well they can fly. One of my cockatiels cannot fly to save her life and I clip her wings or else she crashes into everything at full speed. However, her mate can fly very well and it helps him get back to the perch when he gets spooked. Harold the parakeet needs to be able to fly in order to get away from the bully birds, like my indian ringneck who is clipped

  • ... it has been 3 days since he passed, and I feel like there is a hole in my heart...

I never thought I could love a bird so much, but I did, and I still do.

My answer is this: accidents can happen to anyone at any time, but in my opinion the risks involved with flight far outweigh the risks of non-flight. My vet said it was a freak thing that happened to us, but if it happened to me, it can happen to anyone.

When I get another bird, you better believe he'll be clipped, happy, and ALIVE.

  • I had a beloved male cockatiel who was the love of my life. Slept, showered, and LIVED on me 24/7. He was my heart.

After molting this year I decided to let him keep his new flight feathers awhile, to see how it went. For a few weeks he was fine, until one day, flying to the windowsill to sit in the sun, he slammed into the edge of it and broke his entire top beak off. He survived, and was tube fed for 15 days, until he died from a hole in his esophagus as a result of the tube feeding.
