Pretty straight forward I think. This one went very smoothly and I was pleased with the outcome. I think this video accurately describes the best way to jump start a dead battery. I want to thank Jennifer Sharon for submitting this question via e-mail at EricTheCarGuy.com, I thought it was an excellent topic to cover. I do wish to hold some kind of contest for the best car question submitted but I need to work out the details (I'm also hoping to gain more subs from it so I think I want to make that part of the contest). In the mean time if you have a question you would like answered please feel free to submit it at any time as a response to this video or visit the EricTheCarGuy forum, or EricTheCarGuy.com for a direct conduit to me.

Till next time be safe and stay dirty

  • If the battery was badly run down, it's a good idea to leave the cables connected for a while (even as much as 10 - 15 minutes) after you get the car started. A really weak battery tends to draw a significant amount of amperage just to charge it. If you heavily load your alternator, you can burn out the stator. With the cables still connected, you have the fully charged battery (and alternator) from the donor car to supply enough current to bring the weak battery up to a safe level.

  • @jjenson2006 Excellent point, to be honest you really shouldn't 'charge' your battery with the alternator in the first place for that very reason. Thank you very much for your input.

  • So Positive to Positive (x2 cars), Negative to Negative x1 (working car), Negative to Shiny part near engine (bad car). What happens when you connect positive to negative or negative to position ^____^

  • @Mystearical You could damage the electrical system because that would cause a direct short.

  • is there any danger of electocuting yourself if you touch both leads of the battery at the same time with bare hands ?

  • @emannyc2002 No, your body doesn't conduct electricity well at all and there is not enough voltage in a battery to hurt you.

  • what happens if you connect your penis to positive and your anus to negative?

  • My cock is getting hard when seeing car batteries.

  • Why do every jumpstarting related video start with the "car wont start" scene??

  • I've always just hooked up both cables to the two negative and two positive poles, and it always seems to work just fine. Why should I stop doing this?

  • Thanks for the video.. off to give a jumpstart..

  • hope you had the garage open dont want that carbon monoxide to put you asleep

  • @EricTheCarGuy That's correct You shouldn't charge a weak/dead battery with the alternator. However, in most cases that's what they'll do. When someone needs a jump and their battery has been run down quite a bit (ex. left lights on at a distant place) they're going to drive it like that. The first 5 - 10 minutes driving that way are hard on the alternator. This is why I say keep it connected to the donor car for at least 10 mins. The strong bat in the donor car will protect both alternators.
