He chose to stay below and to communicate to the people above deck what to do and made sure the two gentleman with him were able to get out. And that cost him I'm sure his life. But he did that willingly, and that's a very, very heroic act."] [Notes:Map Gulf of Mexico]The crew was competing in a race from Galveston Texas to Veracruz Mexico.Just under ten hours in ... the boat started taking in water. [Notes:Rescue Vid] In less than a minute ..... The vessel had flipped over and began to sink. 26 hours later .... The Coast Guard rescued the five surviving sailors from the water. They've all suffered obviously from exposure to sunburn , dehydration, in an effect of being in salt water for extended periods of time, hypothermia as well.
