Australian? Canadian? American? - Scottish settlers brought them from Scotland the 18th century - and the music to go with them - check out the Gone with the Wind Reels clip - all Scottish tunes playing!! And the same reels are still played and danced in Scotland today - and yes the most popular is called Strip the Willow! If you're looking for the music go to a Scottish ceilidh - its all there!.
why dont any of these virginia reel videos include the actual song "The Virgina Reel" i've seen one with turkey in the straw, this one they are playing the rose of alabama, i even saw one where they were dancing to a jig, which is ridiculous
Oh, this is magnificent footage !! An amazing discovery for me here, watching this wonderful dance group. Here in Australia, we call this same style of folk dancing "Bush Dancing" (i.e. pioneer traditions, dating way back from the mid 1800s). And the Virginia Reel shown here has great similarity to an Australian locally-famous Bush Dance version which we call "Strip The Willow". This clip : A joy to watch ! Many thanks !!
Have you actually watched the film? The opening of the scene is almost exactly like the dance shown here. The characters dance the Virginia Reel only briefly, then go into other dances, including the waltz.
The fiddle tune in that scene was different-I can't find it anywhere on here (even on the gwtw soundtrack it isn't there). It was the best-she wouldn't have minded dancing with Abe Lincoln himself.
Mind you, I'm not positive, given that it's only a few seconds, but I'm fairly certain that the song that they dance to in Gone with the Wind is "Irish Washerwomen" But again, I'm not positive. Hope this helped though.

they brought the music and the dance form (square dance or reel) with them
