OH to be in Paris in the snow! Karl Lagerfeld invited us to a romantic winter scene in the Grand Palais for Chanel this morning -- a square, glittering snowy catwalk below cumulous clouds of chiffon, some of which rose higher into the ceiling for the show's finale releasing mist and snow that covered the audience and the models taking their final turn. Lagerfeld is clearly in a good mood -- but he was in no mind for hanging around, sending his first models out before the audience had even settled in their seats and causing panic among the security guards. The first blanket tweeds of turquoise and coral, with combinations thereafter of red, black and yellow, had a Seventies feel to them and were fun to wear. Accessorised with lilac striped hats and pompom-ended scarves, Karl was giving us permission to go off duty next winter. But that doesn't mean the look isn't carefully conceived -- crimp your hair and lay it just so over your eyes and wear matching tartan knee-high boots with buckles all the way up the back. One white suit with gold buttons was gloriously, typically Chanel, while the double-C cuffs and fringed handbags continue to be high on every fashionista hit list. The accessories didn't stop there -- you'll be able to smother yourself in glittering Chanel logos next season and, as much as he'll let you indulge your chicest Forties Parisian whims in a square cut navy tweed suit with a beret, Lagerfeld also wants you to take the label and run with it without the formality so many other French labels require at all times. One black tweed shift dress was held around the neck by a white disc in a sexy nod to futurism while other LBDs with a bow on one shoulder and another wrapping around to the opposite hip were pretty and sophisticated in equal measure -- perfect to keep the young hip Chanel girls including Diane Kruger, Lou Doillon and Vanessa Paradis in party wear for another season. Leather joined the traditional Chanel tweed suits so that just a little plaid showed at the lapel and between the seams, while iridescent gold and silver sequined pencil skirts and lace and silk black evening dresses and backless batwing knits brought the fun to an end with serious style. The Rolling Stones mixed with the Vanilla Ice backbeat eventually opened into Queen's Under Pressure and finally into Lou Reed's Perfect Day - and Lagerfeld provided Chanel for every mood that might take you.
