"I am Khmer" is a first person documentary account of a young Cambodian / Canadian (Sarorn Sim), travelling for the first time to Cambodia - the homeland his parents were forced to flee in the late 1970's.
Written and Directed by Steven N. Bray and Sarorn Sim in 2002, this 46 minute film is an emotional, introspective look into ones culture, realizing the complexity of family history and coming to terms with the hardship of loss. It is a rite of passage of understanding, and a pursuit for belonging to a nation that you no longer call home.
Beautifully shot amidst the lush jungles, fields and village vistas of Cambodia, the film takes us from the poor and remote villages of Sarorn's parent's birth, to the hooros of the "Killing Fields" of Choueng Ek, to the ancient marvels of the Angkor temples, the pride and spirit of the Khmer people.
