This is actually a video of a bad VHS tape (the camera connection was bad.) This is graphic video of Jenelle on the Video EEG at UCLA being tested to determine a focal point for her seizures (They never found a focal point and diagnosed her with Lennox Gastaut Syndrome.) We were waking her at 3:30 AM to feed her as she was to go without food for her MRI/PET scan later that day. This seizure started as a grand mal, and then went into a complex partial. The seizure lasted 10 minutes, and her lips turned blue (you will see us give her blow by oxygen.) The screaming that you hear is involuntary - Jenelle was not screaming in pain. This clip is just under 3 minutes into the seizure and was taken in April 2004.

  • Does your daughter have Lennox-Gastaut?? I have 2 kids with Dravet Syndrome....similar but some of the LG meds actually make Dravet kids worse. Dravet is characterized with seizures starting bfore 1 year of age and different types of seizures that are difficult to control. Will pray for your kiddo too.God Bless.

  • Jenelle was actually examined by Dr. Dravet in 2004 when she was in Los Angeles for a conference. Wonderful woman! Jenelle has Lennox Gastaut, and does not have Dravet Syndrome. Dr. Dravet actually worked under Dr. Gastaut, and has observed many LGS kids in her practice.

  • this is very sad

  • Don't be sad. My child has Epilepsy. There is no cure for Epilepsy. Most people have never seen a seizure before, so I am sharing them to create awareness. Increased awareness about her devastating condition will make her future world a better place. Remember that, and thank you for your comment.

  • Hi, thanks for uploading this. I'm a student in pediatrics so this sort of resource is extremely valuable to me.

Just a question, does Jenelle go into an absence seizure at around 42 secs in this video, because I read somewhere that atypical absence seizures are a part of Lennox-Gastaut.

  • Yes, Jenelle goes into an absence seizure shortly after the "screaming" part stops. Jenelle has had maybe 10 Grand Mals in her entire life! The majority of her seizures with LGS are absence, tonic seizure (where she stiffens and turns blue), complex partial (absence with jerks) and myoclonic (head drops) with an occassional grand mal once in a blue moon. I'm glad this was helpful to you.

  • It's hard on both you and Jenelle, I'm sure, but Epilepsy isn't something we should pity and so I admire both her strength for being so brave and yours for raising awareness.

It's people like yourself that make a difference.

Again, wishing you all the best.

  • my sons seizures look like this but the are not sure what type of seizure he has and he has to be put on oxygen....good luck and stay strong

  • Thx for sharing this to help us all learn. In case you didn't hear, the medicine LamictalXR was approved on 1/29/10 for generalized tonic-clonic seizures in 13 year-olds on up (medicine also treats partial onset seizures). This is really good news. The Wall Street Journal and other news sources ran this... Do a Google search for this news and the details b/c YouTube will not accept a URL to share the info. Ask your doctor about the medicine and how it will help.
