This isn't instantly clear, but there is actually an entirely different path split for the entire period of the game between "The Minerva team leaves your party" and "Gym Ginganham destroys the World Tree." On your first playthrough, getting this involves being very nice to Shin Asuka. (This is much harder on the Rand route), but it is automatic on a New Game +. Taking the "stay with ZEUTH" split allows you to recruit Haman and Talia/Rey, have Beck for a bit, and various other gimmicks.
