Ray Kroc's autobiography -- Grinding it Out: The Making of McDonald's -- is a good read if you wish for more information on the man behind McDonald's Corporation. He also made for a great case study by being one of the first to force strict quality standards -- from the food all the way to inspecting bathrooms to make sure they were clean -- on franchissees and making it so a burger tastes exactly the same even in opposite parts of the world, a previously unknown feat.
i think harland sanders pioneered the restaraunt franchise business.

Ray Croc was definitley a pioneer of his time. He created a way for the modern franchising business that individual entrepreneurs could be a part of.
